May '79 doesn't get much mention, compared to October '79.... I think this is because pretty much the whole May tour is only available in aud tapes - versus the fall soundboards - so fewer people check it out. Looking at the reviews for these shows, it's notable that most of them are from people who were there (and a few are gripers complaining about the sound). But it's Brent's first tour, (and before the Go to Heaven songs started filling up setlists), so it's not only an interesting period in the history of the Dead, these shows seem on average equal to or better than the summer '79 shows.

There is some nice stuff here - though I don't have time to write up a full review, I can point out a few highlights. (Perhaps others can point out some highlights I've skipped.)

actually many of these audience recordings are very good, so there's no reason to skip these shows. I would recommend 5-8-79 as the best of the bunch, followed closely by 5-3 and 5-5 (SBD does exist for this one). It's interesting in that there seems to be 3 distinct periods of '79 that all sound different. There's the end of the Keith and Donna era where Jerry was playing the fastest licks of his life. They slowed down a little for the May through August shows, and then really slowed down for the fall tour.

if soundboards surfaced for these shows, May '79 would be the new black...

Thanks LIA

Speaking of May AUD's, this one is pretty darn good once you get into AUD listening mode

The performance itself is outstanding
